FIVE GOLFING GETAWAYS

B irdie, Eagle, Air Shot, flight Golfing language reveals a decidedly air- bound sport! As in aeronautics,

self-control and precision of movement make all the difference. Both great qualities which have been the making of legends such as Tiger Woods, an icon in the golfing world. He and some of the most talented golf players around gathered at the Golf National at Guyancourt (Yvelines, France) from 25 to 30 September for the traditional Ryder Cup, a US vs. Europe tournament which saw the European team victorious this year.

The Golf National, a jewel in the French golfing crown, is therefore our starting point. Three magnificent 18-hole courses interweave and test the nerves of even the most experienced golfers. You may fly over the Golf National when landing at the nearby Toussus-le-Noble airport. It s the perfect chance to appreciate from up above the magnificent lines of its fairways.

VALLEY OF THE KINGS

Take a big swing and you re off westward bound. In the heart of the Loire valley, the Golf de Touraine extends its time-weathered greens in a natural setting of woods and ponds, sculpted with passion since 1973. Did the kings of France play golf on their impeccable lawns well before the Scottish founders of the sport? History does not say.

WEST COAST GOLFING

A few hours flight later, your wrists well prepared after the rounds at Touraine, don your spikes at the Golf de Royan (Charentes, France) and enjoy its charming course among the dunes

and pines, bathed in the coastal sunlight of this beautiful region. The ocean climate will give you wings so expect birdie after birdie (for those not in the know, birdie means a score of 1-under par on any individual golf hole. Par is the expected number of strokes it should take an expert golfer to complete a hole)!

SAND BETWEEN YOUR TOES

The Pilat sand dune appears on the horizon. Arcachon Bay, preserved from the Atlantic s waves, extends its mirror of water below your wings. You land in Andernos-les-Bains (Gironde, France) and take the boat across to the Golf International d Arcachon. Make the most of the seaside resort s micro-climate to finetune your putt and top up your tan. When leaving - having eaten your fill of the region s oysters - don t miss the chance to fly over Malprat, a small island where wild ducks pass and fish farming once flourished.

666 METRES, PAR-SIX

A little further south along the Nouvelle Aquitaine coast in Seignosse (Landes, France), you will find the only par-six in France. A hole opportunely named 666, the exact distance in metres from start to finish flag! Enjoy this opportunity to (re)discover the Basque country, its lifestyle and authentic interior. n Pierre Marilly
