E stablished in 1918, Sylt s airfield served civilians and military alike until 1972, when the Bundeswehr,

the German army, stopped using it. This is Germany s northernmost airport. It s on a magnificent island that barely measures 100 sq. km. and is a tourist magnet. Every year, the airport totals approximately 13,000 movements of which 7,000 are in the general aviation category. That s a high number! We re very proud to serve domestic and international destinations.

POPULAR FOR SECOND HOMES SINCE THE 1920s

There are many reasons for a pilot to head to Sylt. One is to enjoy the rush of adventure afforded by flying over the sea. Another is to admire its unspoiled natural surroundings, white sand beaches flanked by dunes and scattered with pretty, wicker beach chairs. And let s face it; it doesn t hurt to give in to the temptation of playing an aviator from the Roaring Twenties! For those seeking shelter from the wind of the moors, there are many indoor attractions, inclu- ding the spa, the casino and excellent seafood restaurants. Here and there, the celebrity- watcher will spot well-known athletes and movie stars that own homes on this heavenly little island.

SET UP TO WELCOME PILOTS We re open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The airfield spans 240 hectares, big enough for two

runways. On the aviation fuel front, AIR TOTAL became the exclusive supplier in January 2016. Next summer, pilots can refuel with JET A-1, AVGAS 100 LL and AVGAS UL 91 at the pump. This will give general aviation traffic an extra boost. We chose TOTAL for its attractive rates and because pilots associate its name with quality. According to Stephan Haake, going for European certification is one of the major pro- jects underway. Our airfield is nearly a hundred years old, so it s a great challenge for us to adapt to meet the many EU standards appli-

cable to procedures, infrastructure and the environment. In addition, the airport is always looking for ways to improve what it offers pilots. We worked with TOTAL to introduce the Sylt Welcome Package. For a special price ( 15 to 20, depending on month of visit), one gets 5 litres of AVGAS 100LL, two days of parking and a Gosh voucher for a fish bun, one Langnese ice cream and Kölln cookies. With treatment like this, one can feel like a privileged islander! What are you waiting for? Start preparing your flight plan! n Pascale Nizet

Germany s largest island, Sylt is at the border with Denmark. Technically a peninsula because of its rail link to the mainland since 1927 Sylt continues to attract pilots from near and far. We talked to Stephan Haake, project and quality officer at the airport on Sylt, an island that s the darling of the jet set.
