I n, 2013, Cornwall Airport Newquay served 170, 000 passengers. In 2017 this number had risen to over 450, 000, making it the fastest-growing airport in the UK outside London. Today, five airlines serve 21 UK and
European routes with a sixth airline commencing operations in 2019. The airport is extremely well- connected and serves the hubs of Manchester and London Gatwick all year round. The London Gatwick route alone carries 160,000 passengers per annum.
DIVERSIFYING THE BUSINESS
Owned by Cornwall Council, the airport has a policy of accommodating any type of customer, as long as it s safe and secure and there is a benefit for Cornwall , explains Richard Thomasson, Airport Operations Manager. The site started life as a base for the Royal Air Force (RAF), and still accommodates military training. Some of the former RAF hangars are now used for the general aviation community and FLYNQY, the on-site flying school. Other key partners include Bristow UK Coastguard Search and Rescue; Cobham Helicopters, a helicopter training academy; Weston Aviation, the airports fixed base operator; and Apple Aviation, an aircraft engineering maintenance and repair company. We are very flexible and open to new customers , says Mr. Thomasson. Last year, the aerodrome was the site of a trial run for Bloodhound, a UK-based project to break the world land speed record. On the Cornwall runway, it reached a speed of 200 mph with the world s media watching.
TOTAL S 7-DAY SUPPLY CHAIN
As we have increased our activities, Total has been with us all the way , says Mr. Thomasson.

Located on England s south-west peninsula, Cornwall Airport Newquay punches above its weight. It offers the UK s eighth- longest runway (2744 m) and extremely precise (CAT III) landing instruments even though Cornwall s population is just half a million. Combined with a can-do mindset, this has triggered extensive growth.

They are unique in delivering 7 days a week, which means we can be more responsive to our customers, especially when we have unscheduled activity . Since partnering with Total in May 2017, the airport has sold over 6 million litres of three different types of fuel. Total also caters for specific needs, providing F-34 fuel for military clients. The partnership with Total continues to strengthen. The latest project? A bespoke training video, educating people on how to manage fuel farms and fuel quality. A real need for the market , explains Mr. Thomasson. n Richard Woodruff
